The iconic horror franchise Friday the 13th is making a splash with a new TV series, and this time, it's heading to the small screens of the UK and Ireland! But here's where it gets intriguing... The series, titled Crystal Lake, has had quite the journey before landing its streaming home.
A Legal Battle and Creative Revival:
The project began with a bang in 2022 when original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller won the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lengthy legal battle. Miller wasted no time in assembling a dream team, including lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, and the Peacock streaming service. The team also welcomed showrunner Bryan Fuller, known for his work on Hannibal and Pushing Daisies.
A Creative Speed Bump:
With filming expected to start in July 2024, the project hit a snag when Fuller and his collaborator Jim Danger Gray were let go in April 2024. But the show must go on, and it did! In August 2024, Brad Caleb Kane, co-showrunner and executive producer of the upcoming It prequel series, It: Welcome to Derry, stepped in as the new showrunner.
A Journey to the UK and Ireland:
Filming for Crystal Lake began in June 2024 in New Jersey, and it's now confirmed that Sky and its streaming service Now will bring the series to UK and Irish audiences. Katie Keenan, Group Director of Acquisitions for Sky UK and Europe, expressed her enthusiasm: "We're thrilled to bring Crystal Lake... to our customers." The series is expected to premiere sometime in 2026, offering a fresh take on the beloved franchise.
A Star-Studded Cast:
The cast features Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, Jason's vengeful mother, and a host of talented actors. Nick Cordileone, William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom round out the ensemble. Fans will delight in seeing legacy characters like Dorf, the motorcycle cop from the original film, and Barry and Claudette, the first two victims in Friday the 13th. Callum Vinson and Zachary Branch will portray young and adult Jason Voorhees, respectively.
Creative Vision and Controversy:
Kane, credited as creator, writer, and executive producer, has a personal connection to the franchise, stating, "Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick." But a question lingers: Will Kane's vision honor the original scripts, or will he forge a new path? And this is the part most fans are curious about! The series' interpretation of Pamela Voorhees as a mother who gave up her singing career to care for a special needs child is already sparking conversations.
