Gaza's Twins: A Mother's Journey | IDFA 2025 (2025)

Prepare to be moved by a powerful story of resilience and love in the face of war.

'Gaza's Twins, Come Back to Me' is a heart-wrenching documentary that sheds light on the human cost of the Israel-Hamas conflict. This film, directed by Mohammed Sawwaf, takes us on an emotional journey with a mother and her twins, separated by the devastating impact of war.

The story begins in 2023, as Rania, eight months pregnant, finds herself in the midst of an Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip. She gives birth to triplets, but tragedy strikes as one of the girls passes away at birth. The surviving twins, Jowan and Hamoud, are born weak and require immediate medical attention. As their hometown in northern Gaza is bombed, the twins are placed in an incubator, and their journey of survival begins.

But here's where it gets controversial: the hospital where the twins are being treated is evacuated, and they are moved to southern Gaza, away from their mother. Rania's sister, Nisreen, steps in to care for the twins, but a travel ban prevents their reunion. Over the course of 16 months, the film follows the parallel lives of Rania and her twins, showcasing the unbreakable bond of motherhood and family, even in the harshest of circumstances.

Sawwaf, a filmmaker based in Gaza, shares his personal connection to this story. He explains, "I was injured in an Israeli airstrike, and at that time, I felt a deep connection to this family's struggle. These vulnerable twins, caught between war zones, inspired me to document their journey."

The film takes an immersive, observational approach, allowing the camera to capture the raw reality of life during war. Sawwaf wanted to showcase the daily struggles and the deep longing for connection that these families experience.

In the exclusive clips we have for you, we meet Rania, who reflects on the clothes her twins have outgrown, and we hear the tragic story of the lost triplet. We also get to know Nisreen, the dedicated aunt who takes on the role of caregiver, and we witness the challenges little Hamoud faces, with a promise from Nisreen that he will one day understand his journey.

This documentary is a powerful reminder of the human stories often overlooked in conflicts. It leaves us with a thought-provoking question: In times of war, how do we protect and nurture the most vulnerable among us?

And this is the part most people miss: the resilience and strength of families like Rania's, who find hope and love even in the darkest of times.

What are your thoughts on the impact of war on families? Do you think documentaries like this can help raise awareness and spark meaningful conversations? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments!
