A Cry for Help: The Plight of Ibanda–Kitagwenda Road
A deteriorating road, a lifeline for communities, is causing immense distress to residents and local leaders.
The Ibanda–Kitagwenda road, spanning 32 kilometers, has become a challenging journey, especially for taxi drivers, after heavy rains exacerbated its already poor condition. This road, under the Ministry of Works and Transport's management, serves as a vital connection between Ibanda and Kitagwenda districts, facilitating trade, agriculture, and daily commutes.
But here's where it gets controversial... Residents and local leaders are united in their concern. The road, last rehabilitated in 2022, has since deteriorated, forming deep potholes and becoming a slippery hazard during rainfall. Many travelers are opting for the longer Nyabugando–Rwamasinde route, resulting in increased travel time and costs.
"We're suffering. It's too dangerous, especially when it rains. If tarmacking is not an option, at least frequent maintenance is needed," expressed a concerned resident.
Kitagwenda District Vice Chairperson, Peter Ashaba, emphasized the road's economic significance. "This road is crucial for trade in both districts. Transport becomes incredibly difficult when it's in poor condition," he said, urging the government to take immediate action.
In response, the Ministry of Works and Transport has promised relief. Doreen Kukunda, from the Ibanda station, confirmed that rehabilitation works will commence next week. "The ministry is aware and has made preparations for immediate action," she assured.
And this is the part most people miss... The tarmacking of this road was promised in the NRM 2011–2016 manifesto, a pledge that has yet to be fulfilled. However, President Yoweri Museveni recently renewed this commitment during his Parish Development Model tour, offering a glimmer of hope to the residents.
With rehabilitation works on the horizon, communities along the route are optimistic about improved transport, which will restore the vital economic and social bond between Ibanda and Kitagwenda.
